Why CDMA is better than GSM : (My Outrageous Cellular Call by Stewart Alsop in Fortune, Oct 28, 2002)

A quick comparison between CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) by Alsop
a) The CDMA systems transmit clearer sound and is better suited for data
b) It is easier and cheaper to install and upgrade CDMA
With these qualities and with a cellular infrastructure in place, CDMA could also disrupt deployment of Wi-Fi (or 802.11 standard) - the wireless data service.

On the flip side, GSM powers almost 70% of current global base of 1 billion cellphones. CDMA runs only 5%. CDMA is deployed by only a few providers in South Korea and Japan. Verizon and Sprint in US have recently selected it.
